The changing tides of Chatham: The New Tide marks the town’s next chapter
Date posted 11/08/2026
Chatham is entering an exciting new chapter, with continued investment transforming the town centre, waterfront and public spaces into a more attractive, better-connected place to live, work and visit.
Over the past six years, Chatham and the wider Medway area have benefitted from significant regeneration. New homes have been delivered alongside improvements to public spaces, transport connections and local amenities, while growing investment has helped create a thriving destination that respects the town’s rich maritime heritage while looking confidently to the future.
The latest milestone in this transformation is The New Tide, a collection of contemporary one- and two-bedroom Shared Ownership apartments being developed by Medway Development Company (MDC), bringing a landmark building back into active use in the heart of Chatham town centre.
Designed by internationally renowned architects CF Møller, the former office building has been thoughtfully reimagined to provide high-quality homes that complement the town’s ongoing regeneration. Most apartments are dual aspect, with generous windows creating bright, welcoming interiors, while private balconies and upper-floor views across the River Medway reinforce the development’s connection to Chatham’s historic waterfront.
Beyond the homes themselves, The New Tide will contribute to the continued revitalisation of the town centre. The development will introduce new commercial and hospitality space alongside an attractive public realm that completes a key pedestrian route linking Chatham High Street directly with Chatham railway station. The improved connection will make it easier to move through the town centre, support local businesses and create a more welcoming environment for residents and visitors.
Lewis Small, Managing Director of Medway Development Company, said, “The New Tide reflects the confidence and ambition behind Chatham’s regeneration. We’re not simply creating new homes; we’re helping to strengthen the town centre by bringing a prominent building back into use, improving connections and creating opportunities for more people to become part of Chatham’s future."
“As well as delivering high-quality homes, Shared Ownership makes home ownership more accessible, helping local people and first-time buyers take their first step onto the property ladder and become part of Chatham’s growing community.”
Available through Shared Ownership, The New Tide offers buyers the opportunity to purchase an initial share of their home while paying a subsidised rent on the remaining share. With a lower deposit and mortgage than buying outright, it provides a more affordable route into home ownership, with the flexibility to increase ownership over time through staircasing.
Buyers will also benefit from Chatham’s excellent transport links, including high-speed rail services to London, together with a revitalised waterfront, expanding amenities and continued investment across Medway.
As Chatham’s transformation continues, The New Tide represents another important step in creating a vibrant town centre where people can live, work and thrive.
